Why I Love Dot Markers for My Kids

As a mom, I’m always on the lookout for fun and educational activities that can keep my kids engaged while also helping them develop important skills. Dot markers have become one of our favorite art supplies for several reasons.

Easy for Little Hands

Dot markers are perfect for my little ones who are still developing their fine motor skills. The thick barrel is easy for small hands to grip, and the spongy tip allows for smooth dot application without the mess that often comes with regular markers or paint brushes. This means less frustration for them and less cleanup for me!

Encourages Creativity and Skill Development

Using dot markers is not just about making pretty pictures. The act of creating artwork with dots helps my kids build hand-eye coordination and improve their pencil grip. The repetitive dotting motion also strengthens the small muscles in their hands, which is essential for writing. It’s amazing to see how their creativity flourishes with each new masterpiece they create.

Where to Buy Dot Markers

Finding dot markers is easy. We usually pick ours up from arts and crafts stores like Michaels, Hobby Lobby, or Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores. They are typically located in the kids’ art supplies section. Major retailers like Target, Walmart, and Amazon also carry a wide variety of dot marker sets. When shopping, I always look for washable, non-toxic markers made specifically for kids.

Dot Marker FAQs

Are dot markers washable?

Yes, most quality dot markers made for kids are washable and non-toxic. However, I always supervise my kids to avoid any accidental stains on clothes or furniture.

How long do dot markers last?

With proper care and storage, a set of quality dot markers can last 6 months to a year of regular use. I make sure to recap them tightly after each use to keep them from drying out.

Can you use dot markers on paper, wood, canvas?

Dot markers work best on paper or cardstock. They may bleed through thin paper, so I usually use thicker paper to avoid any mess.

Are dot markers messy?

Compared to regular markers & paint, dot markers are relatively mess-free. The thick spongy tips are designed to create clean dots without dripping or smearing when used properly. This makes them a great choice for both my kids and myself.

My Favorite Items I Use For Printables

  • Copy Paper & Cardstock: Depending on what project or worksheet I’m doing with my kids, I will always have copy paper and cardstock. Cardstock is more durable than copy paper.
  • Crayons: Of course for coloring pages and other worksheets, I will always have crayons.
  • Markers: Crayola’s washable markers are one of my favorites. The colors are vibrant and they easily wash off of my kids hands and my table if any accidental marks happen.
  • Colored pencils: These can be used for more detailed coloring.
  • Laminating pouches: For worksheets i want to use over and over i like to put them in laminating pouches.
  • Laminating machine: If you use the laminating pouches, you will need a laminating machine to seal the pouch.
