12 Classroom Games for Back to School
If you’re a teacher (or you’re helping out in the classroom this year), you already know the first few weeks are all about setting the tone. A good classroom game can do so much like break the ice, burn off some wiggly energy, or just give everyone a reason to laugh together before the real work starts.
Here are 12 of our favorite classroom games for back to school, from quiet, no-supplies-needed options to a few printable games that are ready to go with zero prep.

1. Heads Up, Seven Up A classroom classic for a reason. Seven kids go to the front, the rest put their heads down with a thumb up, and the seven quietly press one thumb down each. Whoever’s thumb got picked has to guess who did it. Quiet, low-prep, and somehow never gets old.
2. Silent Ball Kids toss a soft ball around in complete silence, no talking, no laughing (easier said than done). Anyone who talks, drops the ball, or makes a bad throw is out. It’s a great way to get some quiet, focused energy out of a chatty afternoon.

3. Simon Says Another one that never really goes out of style. Great as a quick 5-minute filler between activities or as a way to reset a room that’s getting a little too energetic.
4. Stand Up If… Call out a statement (“stand up if you have a pet,” “stand up if you like pizza”) and have kids stand if it’s true for them. It’s a simple way for a whole class to start noticing what they have in common.
5. Categories Pick a category (animals, foods, colors) and go around the room having each student name something in that category without repeating an answer already given. Easy to run with zero materials, and it keeps everyone paying attention since they need to remember what’s already been said.
6. Charades Give kids a simple word or phrase to act out (school-themed ones work great for back to school) while classmates guess. A little silly, a lot of fun, and always a good way to get even shy kids grinning.
7. Whisper Down the Lane The classic game of telephone. Whisper a phrase to the first kid in line, have it passed down the row, and see how wildly it’s changed by the time it reaches the end. Reliably hilarious with a big enough group.
8. Fizz Buzz Count around the room, but swap out any number that’s a multiple of 3 for “Fizz” and any multiple of 5 for “Buzz.” It’s technically a math game, but it plays like a party game, and it’s a sneaky good way to get a class laughing and thinking at the same time.
9. Candy Dice Game Give every kid a few pieces of candy, then take turns rolling a die, take one, take two, skip a turn, give one away, whatever the roll says. First to a set number of pieces wins. 10. What’s Your School Name? A silly name-generator game where kids use the first letter of their first and last name to build out a goofy “school name” (like Amazing Apple or Clever Crayon). Also part of the Game Bundle, and it’s a fun one for name tags or a first-day icebreaker.
11. Musical Chairs Set up chairs in a circle, play some music, and have kids scramble for a seat every time it stops, removing one chair each round. A little old-school, but it’s a reliable favorite for a reason, especially for younger grades.
12. Class Trivia Showdown Split the class into teams and run a quick trivia round, mixing in some school-related questions with just-for-fun ones. A great way to close out the first week and let kids show off a little in front of their new classmates.
